The Ultimate Guide to Being a Primary Teacher in Western Australia

Updated: Apr 14, 2024

I was never exposed to career goals during our school years. We see what others are doing and get information from around us. Becoming an engineer was the only choice I had as I didn't like roles in the medical field. Medical jobs were then popular, as always. If not a medical job, another option was to become an engineer. So I focussed to be one!

Well, it was then new areas in engineering were being introduced in our country. One such interesting course was Food Processing Engineering (Food technology). Considering many factors, I decided I want to be a Food Engineer. Completed the degree with much difficulty (being a new course, there weren't enough resources) and then got into a role in product development at a superb company in South India, Synthite http://www.synthite.com/synthite.html. So far, my favourite workplace. Learned heaps from there, in fact, I begin learning Food technology after started working in this aroma-filled place. We extract oleoresin and essential oil for food manufacturers at Synthite.

Moved to Perth after a year and continued with the same career for another nine years. Done several roles in various food industries in Perth. I enjoyed working at every place. Every role had its own challenges but it was worth it when I think of the skills I learned and the strong, bold person I have become. I was soaring high as a Food Technologist.

Meanwhile, I was tutoring as a side hustle. My love for maths and passion for children helped me become a successful tutor. I have taught many kids from different year levels, over the past ten years. This helped me learn about the Australian Curriculum https://k10outline.scsa.wa.edu.au/home/teaching/curriculum-browser and get more insight into the education system. Teaching several students from various Schools helped me understand the state of most of the schools in the south of Perth.

Soon, I realized that I enjoy teaching a lot, but didn't want to leave the food technology role. The more I told myself not to leave the food industry, the more I was getting passionate about teaching. So I decided to take my career success as a treasured experience and move on to the next chapter in my career. Happened to meet a few teachers and principals in WA those days (Coincidence). With their guidance, I figured out what I need to do further. It is a requirement to have a teaching degree in order to become a teacher in Western Australia.

Being graduated from a non-English speaking country, it was a requirement to show great scores on a language test (IELTS or PTE) to get admission to universities. I sat for the PTE test within the same month after my big decision. Being a busy mom of 4yo, I could practice only for a few days for the test. My professional experience and tutoring skills influenced positively that, I got through the PTE test with an overall score of 87. I give all credit to the giver of wisdom who led me through these paths.

Started my studying journey after 12 years! Currently pursuing my Master in Teaching at Notre Dame University, Fremantle. It is an amazing experience. Love my masters bunch! We are helpful and respectful to each other. The journey to uni on the bus is my 'me time'. Studies get too busy some semesters, but I like the learning process. I adore every tutors and teachers, who understands every student and gives their best to make us efficient teachers. Practical (professional experience) hours are one whole term every year, for masters and that's the best part of this learning journey. Workshops and tutorials are fun, even lectures online or face-to-face. I use the free hours between tutorials, to catch up with reading and assignments.

Fremantle is the best place in Perth (in my eyes). This is another reason why I chose the University of Notre Dame Australia. So folks, get motivated to change your career if you feel like changing. It is not too hard as you probably think. I owe a lot to my husband for his constant support and motivation. I love you! I am certain an Ex-food technologist will make a great primary teacher, to raise a powerful generation.
